I’m selling my 1981 volkswagen rabbit pickup truck. It’s a great little blue truck! I’ve used it to haul all sorts of stuff: welders, bikes, dump runs, 120 cubic feet of foam, motorcycles, furniture, 8 people. I usually use it around town and I get about 38mpg every tank. I’ve done a few longer highway trips where I’ve gotten over 45mpg. It’ll go 75mph no problem.

I bought the VW in March 2015 from a nice guy in Sonoma. Unfortunately, a few months after I bought it, the white smoke from the exhaust got worse and I eventually discovered a crack in the block. After a lot of hrmms and haaas I decided not to abandon this poor little truck, and instead bought a “new” used engine from Germany– a 1.6 TD ECO from a 1994 jetta. I bought the engine from Quality German Auto Parts in LA- it was about $2k plus shipping. I also had the head rebuilt, which was another ~$400. I’ve put maybe ~3000 miles on it since the swap with no issues– it starts right up and runs at the right temp even on the hottest days. I installed a very nice combo boost/psi and EGT gauge as well (westach), and bought a boost controller, but haven’t hooked it up yet. This should allow you to safely turn up the turbo and get more power out of the engine if you want– but I found 65hp is enough!

I’ve done a lot of other stuff to the car. It has new tires, new shift linkage, new engine mounts, clutch, boost/egt gauge, bench seat w/ custom mounts (rear seat from a ford explorer), axles and cv boots, water pump, timing belt, glow plugs, wipers, new windshield washer pump and bottle, front wheel bearings, custom exhaust, and probably some more that I’m forgetting. I love how easy these cars are to work on.

The car drives very nicely. The suspension is cushy but doesn’t bottom out even with 1000lbs in the bed, the lights are bright, wipers work well, 5 speed manual shifts well, and it tracks straight (is aligned). It can catch up to faster, heavier cars in the turns!

The known bad stuff:
-the bench seat is not adjustable– anyone from 5’6″ to 6’6″ can fit, but shorter people will have a tough time reaching the shifter. The bench seat is easily removable, but I don’t have the original seats
-oil light sensor is not connected
-parking brake handle is broken (but parking brake works!)
-fuel gauge does not work (300 on the trip meter does it!)
-has a few dings (don’t worry about scratching it!)
-its not a very safe car (35+ year old tech)
-the engine is loud by modern car standards

I’m selling because I rarely use a car, and prefer to bike. I am also moving to SF and lose my free parking! I’m not in a rush to sell, but am open to reasonable offers. The car is currently in san francisco, but will be coming down to the southbay soon.

Thanks for reading!
