I am selling my 1981 MK1 VW Rabbit Pickup with the 1.6l diesel 5-speed manual.
This little truck is such a blast to drive and is very useful. I have loved this car and driven it all over California. It gets great fuel mileage, it was my daily driver for almost two years.
It had a biodiesel system that was bypassed when I got it that I removed when the pump got rebuilt. The pump is turned up slightly and it is straight piped so it has some get up and go. It looks like it has had engine work, I believe the first owner put an upgraded head since the original ones are notorious for having issues. I also have the original bumpers and exhaust. This one does not have AC.
Some of the specs/upgrades/major maintenance:
Coilovers in the front
2.5″ drop plates in the rear
1/2″ wider stance in the rear
MK1 snowflake GTI wheels
The timing belt and tensioner were replaced in 2019
Injection pump rebuilt in 2019
Shifter bushings
Heater valve
CV axle
The odometer has not worked since I got it and it stopped at 110k miles, I would just roughly keep track of how many miles I was driving it for maintenance. It does not have carpet in the interior, no radio or speakers, and it has a wood floor cover in the bed since it is pretty worn out from the first owner. It is pretty bare-bones and rattly as you would expect from a 40+ year old diesel. There are a couple minor spots of rust with no major rot.
It has no major issues and is a blast to drive I just haven’t driven it much lately since it’s now an extra car. Clean title in my name and you never need smog for it since it is pre smog. I am asking $4000 OBO and am really only looking for cash but would consider a partial trade for a transit connect. I am sure that I am forgetting stuff that has been done to it, let me know if you have any questions. With the amount of interest I will be setting up times to come see the truck but it will be fcfs.
