I purchased the truck in August 2021 with 68,000 miles on the original engine; it now has 72,200. 4 cylinder, 4 speed, 1.7L engine. It is very reliable–I commuted 60 miles/day with it to work for a while. Current registration and smog, pink slip in hand. I also have the original 1981 build sheet from the factory and the original warranty/maintenance booklet.

Mechanics:
The car has a couple of minor, non-urgent mechanical issues that I am aware of: oil pan gasket, temperature gauge. The front left wheel hub/bearing were faulty when I bought the car, but I immediately had them replaced (will show receipts).

Interior:
All original. Generally in good condition aside from a couple small issues: missing headliner, small crack in far front of dash, tear in driver seat. Rear-view mirror is not attached, but I have two ready to go on. See pictures.

Exterior:
Small scratches/dings here and there, as expected on a 40 year old car. Some surface rust in bed, otherwise rust free. Dent in back of left wheel well. The shop I brought it to suspects that the wheel had been improperly attached and fell off, denting the wheel well and damaging the hub/bearing (which I replaced, as mentioned).

Title:
The bad news–the truck has a salvage title. The good news–the VW specialists I brought the truck to on purchasing it, Tomas Sport Tuning in Berkeley, were unable to find ANY structural issues or indeed ANY reason why the title is salvage. This is stated on a receipt they gave me, and they also told me they are willing to verify this info over the phone or in person for any serious buyers. I’m also happy to take the truck for another inspection to a different mechanic of your choosing.
