I am pending selling my 1981 VW Rabbit truck that I have been restoring/converting.
Started life in 1981 as a VW Rabbit LX Diesel pickup.
Owned by original owner will 1993 when she was sold to a man in the East Bay who used her for weekly Home Depot runs. Had 116k miles on her when I got her 6 months ago.
She was bone bare stock, had been sitting for a year, but fired up because… Diesel.
Drove her as my daily/project for a month or so till the rear brakes (drums) died, so I replaced them with Mk2 Scirocco disc brakes with vented rotors. At the same time I flipped the rear axle under the leaf spring, and installed coilover a in front and replace the front discs and rotors as well.
After a month the transmission went. I got ambitious and replaced the engine, transmission and wiring harness with one from my mechanics 1983 GTI with 134K on it.
Car was professionally swapped at The Auto Shop in downtown San Jose. 40 hours of work were spent on it for the conversion. Engine has new head and excellent compression. Transmission is the stock 5 speed 020 transmission from the GTI.
Long story short. I have put s lot of time and money into it. It has a long way to go. I need a commuter, as I drive 45 miles round trip a day for work and this car is more of a fun car.
