Description: About this fine little truck:
*I’ve thoroughly enjoyed owning it.
*It was fitted with the highest geared transmission
(5 speed) available which did not hurt fuel economy.
*My best fuel economy was about 51.417 MPG.
*It is also fitted with the Jetta turbo diesel.
*I recently turned-down a guy who pulled up beside me and offered $4,000. That was
not uncommon. People would routinely come up to me at the gas (diesel) pump, in
parking lots, on the street and offer to buy the truck. I turned down about 5 — 7 offers
for $4,800, one for $4,000 and a young man in a restaurant who had no idea his offer
was several thousand below the other offers I had turned down. It was common for
people to come up to me and ask about my truck, and comment about how much they
liked it.
*Fuel projection prices were announced earlier this year. By years end we can all expect
to be paying $5.15 – $5.35 for diesel and premium. That just increases this trucks appeal.
My calculations were that the truck would have been been driven for free (fuel, license,
maintenance, insurance, original purchase price, etc.) in just two more years when compared
to a ½ ton Ford or Chevy, with just the savings on fuel alone.
Now for the bad news….
Many miles ago, someone (wasn’t me) installed the lower radiator hose with the clamp on
the wrong side of the bibb. It held for a long time but just the other day the hose came off
and now the head gasket leaks. Yes, I still drive it, but not far between topping-off the coolant.
I had decided to rebuild this into a totally brand new vehicle (not a big job, it’s not
a big truck) but I’m trying to finish my shop, garage, house…. There is no time to
lovingly restore my baby and so, I must sell.
*The suspension and half shaft(s) were rebuilt/replaced about 35 months ago.
*It also has recent tires.
*My VW mechanic of forty years went through everything to
be sure the truck would last many miles into my retirement.
*I have a handful of new parts just waiting to be installed.
*It’s not in mint condition. Besides the gasket, there are door handles to be
replaced, engine mounts, dash lights, and a few other items. Like I said, a
handful of new parts just waiting.
Oh… one more thing… New tabs. Got them the day the hose came off….
*The price is $1,650 (maybe I should have taken the $4,000). You will need to fix
the head gasket problem, mounts, door handles (buy the Hella ($48/pair) units, they
will last another 1/3 century. The cheap after market handles only last for a few months),
and repair the dash lights.
One of the photos shows the truck carrying sheets of rigid insulation. (well great… now
I can’t find the image. I’ll insert it into the ad when I find it) (The truck would carry just
a little less than ½ the amount of a 24′ box truck. This truck was versatile, adaptable,
economical, and just a lot of fun to own and drive. I can’t leave the construction of my
new home and can’t give my attention to the Volkswagen so now, it’s your turn to have fun.
Yes, delivery is possible but of course, that does depend on location.
